Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So, God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:26-27).

Look carefully at verse 27: “So, God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

There’s nothing of great importance that I can say about those of you who are mothers…no accolades that I can bestow upon you that God hasn’t already spoken.

For those of you who may be confused about the value God puts on motherhood…or women…consider the fact that He chose to reveal Himself to us through the womb of a woman. The revelation of God…which is Jesus Christ…began in the womb of a virgin.

God, obviously, could have entered the world as a man in any number of ways…but He chose to do so through the womb of a virgin…and by the power of the Holy Spirit. During the time in which Jesus was born…mankind had for centuries labeled women second class citizens. But God has never labeled them in that way.

If you want to know how God feels about women…and the place of honor He gives them in His church…just remember how He revealed Himself to us.

I can’t begin to tell you what a positive influence my mother and grandmothers were on my life. For that matter, all my elementary school teachers were women…as were my Sunday school and VBS teachers…all of whom were positive influences on my life.

Although my paternal grandfather was a preacher/lawman…it was my paternal grandmother who exerted the most spiritual influence on my life. Just as Timothy’s mother and grandmother imparted Christian values to him…my mother and grandmother imparted those values to me.

Unfortunately, through no fault on their part, many of the spiritual things they taught me didn’t kick in until later in life. But what I want to stress is that the goofy theology being taught by some preachers…that a woman shouldn’t teach a man…is a total misrepresentation of scripture and the context in which an inspired writer named Paul penned anything resembling this misconception.

The importance of women in the church can’t be over-emphasized. In fact, the importance of women…period…can’t be over-emphasized. Nor can the value we should put on human life be over-emphasized. Human life is valuable because God…the Creator of all life…says it is. And, God's evaluation is what’s decisive here.

The writer of the eighth Psalm was pondering this when he stated: “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.”

Amid all the mind-staggering immensities of stellar space…of what value am I? How can I have value in relation to the grandeur of God?

The value of a human being rests ultimately on God's evaluation…since He is our Designer and Creator. And, of all that God has created, He has designated human life as having the greatest value.

But the value of human life can’t be found in today’s news. You find no mention of the fact that 125,000 of God’s creations are being murdered in the womb every day. That computes to more than 44 million murders a year…a continual holocaust that goes virtually unnoticed.

There’s also nothing in the news about the fact that nearly half the pregnancies in the United States are unintended…or that four in 10 of those pregnancies are terminated by abortion. By the way, that amounts to 3,000 murders a day…and the sad statistic that 22 percent of the pregnancies in our country end in abortion.

Human life was the climax…or apex…of all the rest of creation. Everything God created was made with human beings in mind. When you look at the world around us…it’s obvious that God designed the universe to support and nourish human life. For example:

  • If you raised or lowered the universe's rate of expansion by even one part in a million…it would rule out the possibility of human life

  • If the average distance between stars were any greater…planets like the earth would not have been formed…and if it were any smaller…the planetary orbits necessary for human life would not have occurred

  • If the ratio of carbon to oxygen had been slightly different than it is…none of us would have been here to breathe the air

  • If the tilt of the earth's axis slightly changed in one direction…we would freeze…and if changed in the other direction…we would burn up

  • Suppose the earth had been a bit closer or further from the sun…or just a little larger or smaller…or if it rotated at a speed any different from the one we're spinning at right now

  • Given any of these changes, the resulting temperature variations would be completely fatal to us. So, the lesson we should draw from all this is that someone…that someone being God…made things just right so we could be here to enjoy life. So, even modern science proves that we must really matter to God…and that human life was the climactic achievement of His creative work

Al Gore and his group are asking all the countries in the world to collectively give them $15 trillion to fight global warming. Something Brother Al and his followers can’t seem to get through their foggy minds is that God has already put in place everything needed to compensate for any of humankind’s abuse to the earth and its atmosphere. No amount of money can change what God has done…or what He intends to do.

Our worth to God is shown in the manner of our creation. In other acts of creation…God spoke and creation occurred. But, God made us. Genesis 2:7 says, “God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being.” God didn’t breathe the breath of life into any other creature.

Human life has value in the fact that only human beings were created in the image and likeness of God. Since God is spirit…image and likeness don’t refer to physical appearance…but rather inner qualities…the ability of human beings to reason…to enter relationships…especially a relationship with God. Human beings are the closest thing in all creation to God…including angels.

We are of such inconceivable worth that God sacrificed His Son so we could be saved from our sins. That’s an estimation beyond our comprehension. But our value is indicated by the fact that God not only loved us enough to create us in His image…but also enough to redeem us by dying for us.

So, the greatest indication of our culture's devaluing of human life is abortion. It’s illegal to transport a pregnant lobster for fear of hurting all the little pre-born lobsters, but in many states a pregnant teen can be transported to an abortion facility without her parent's permission or knowledge.

Our nation is in infected with a diseased way of thinking that attacks the basis of all human worth…much like a virus attacks the human body. We live in a sin-sick society and, as followers of The Great Physician we are called to administer treatment to the sick society in which we live. Like any doctor dealing with sickness, we must do three things: treat the symptoms, minister to the sick, and distribute the cure.

Treating the symptoms involves influencing our culture so that the laws and current philosophies that cheapen and devalue human life are changed. So, can a Christian support murder in the womb? Obviously, some who claim to be Christian do. They are more concerned with the politics associated with abortion…in being politically correct…than with abortion itself. So, while they debate the issue…children in the womb are being murdered.

Some say that how a person responds to this evil is not a test of faith or of fellowship in the body of Christ. I say that it is. Furthermore, I think the Bible says that it is.

While there are many ways to treat the symptoms of a sin-sick world…we must not be satisfied with treating only the symptoms. We must also help the sick…those who have been led to embrace this devaluation of human life.

This means lovingly ministering to those who are on "the other side" of this issue.

Jesus commanded us to love even those who oppose us when we try to do His will. So, our response to people on the other side of this issue should clearly reflect the love of God…even to those who are willfully ignorance of the truth. Satan and his minions have such a grip on the lives of some people that it takes a lot of prayer and reiteration of God’s truth to loosen that grip.

Pro-life strategies should include not only value for the baby in the womb…but for the child’s mother and father as well. We can do this by pressing the point that abortion hurts women. It’s expensive…physically unpleasant…humiliating…and often painful. It doesn’t heal a physical problem…it, instead, subverts a healthy normal process.

The body of each of us is designed to breathe air and digest food…and a woman's body is designed to sustain a pregnancy and deliver a baby. It’s a delicately balanced ecology…and when something disrupts it as violently as abortion does…a tremendous amount of emotional and physical damage can result.

Abortion is presented as something that sets a woman free…but it does just the opposite. Statistics show abortion is most often an act of despair. A survey showed that 70 percent of women who underwent abortions admitted that they believed it was morally wrong…but felt they had no other choice.

Our purpose as Christians is not only to help stop this murder epidemic…but to also administer forgiveness and healing to women who have gone through an abortion. After aborting a baby, many women come to realize the horrible mistake they’ve made and experience unbelievable guilt and alienation. They need the healing forgiveness of God…and loving treatment from a church body can help them understand how precious human life really is.

We must respond to this holocaust by treating the ministering to the sick...and finally, and most importantly, we must distribute the cure.

Abortion and laws that devalue human life are only symptoms of the disease of sin. And, all the marching and voting and legislation in the world will not cure a sin sick heart. If we limit our response to this kind of action we must realize that we are only treating the symptoms of the problem.

The best way to help people value life…as God values life…is to introduce them to Jesus Christ. This is the cure...the way to change people's hearts. Unfortunately, some Christians become so absorbed in fighting the symptoms of abortion that they give up on distributing the cure. Personal evangelism is the most effective-way to heal this disease.

Norma McCorvey is the "Row" of "Row vs. Wade." She fought for the pro-choice movement for years. But then she met a little girl named Emily and her family. This Christian family loved Norma and showed her that they valued her life…even though they disagreed with her on this issue. Their warmth eventually led her to accept their invitation to church.

There she heard the gospel...responded to it...and invited Jesus into her heart and life. Today she works to end abortion because her heart was changed when she met her Creator and committed her life to Him.

Changing hearts is more profitable than changing law. We must not allow ourselves to become sidetracked into treating only the symptoms. We must also distribute the cure…and that cure is Jesus.

What if Mary had aborted Jesus? It’s just a “what if?” that God wouldn’t let happen to His Son. But what would this world be without Jesus? He changed the world…and all for good.

God has created life in the wombs of many women…and many of those lives have been snuffed out by abortion. How many of them would have contributed good to the world? We will never know this side of heaven.
